CA240 Advanced Database Applications

Sample Syllabus

Course Description

Intended for the intermediate database user, this course covers topics such as sub forms, integration of databases, with other applications, customization, and macros. It also introduces Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Together with CA141 this course will create a complete and thorough database series. 3 semester hours

Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: CA 141 or consent of department.
Assessment Levels: EN101/101A, MA100, RD110

Goals and/or Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to

  • Development and enhancement of non-technical skills
    • Speak and write about the course topics with sufficient proficiency
    • Apply critical thinking to a variety of topics in the course
  • Queries
    • Create parameter and summary queries
    • Create a lookup field
    • Create crosstabs, find duplicates, find unmatched, and top value queries
    • Create append, delete, make-table and update queries
    • Use table joins in a query
    • Use special wizards
    • Use SQL
  • Forms
    • Create main and subforms
    • Create multipage forms
    • Use hyperlinks
    • Use list boxes, combo boxes, option groups, check boxes, and toggle buttons in a form
  • Reports
    • Embed charts in a report
    • Link reports to Word or export to Excel
    • Create and use subreports
  • Macros
    • Create and run macros
    • Use conditions in macros
    • Write an autoexec macro
    • Create and use switchboards
  • Customization
    • Use VBA to customize a database by creating functions, event procedures, etc.
    • Set start-up options
    • Create custom toolbars and attach them to forms
