Assessment & Placement

Overview of Assessment & Placement Process

Montgomery College assesses students to determine their entry level skills in reading, English and math. Your scores help counselors and academic advisors recommend appropriate courses for you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Placement Testing - Steps for New Students
1 Submit an Application for Admission before scheduling assessment tests.
2

Determine which assessment test is best for your situation or if you are exempt from testing.

  • New students who learned American English as their first language or attended at least 10 years of school (elementary, middle, high school) in the United States take the Accuplacer test to determine English, reading and mathematics skills. You may take the English and reading sections of the Accuplacer separately from the mathematics section.
  • New students who did not learn American English as their first language or who did not attend at least 10 years of school (elementary, middle, high school) in the United States -- U.S. citizens and residents as well as international students -- must take the Academic American English (LOEP) placement test to determine English and reading skills.
3

Schedule your assessment at one of our campuses

Note: each campus does its own scheduling. Call the Center on the campus where you will attend.

Please arrive 15 minutes early. A United States issued photo identification or an international passport is required for entry.

If you have a documented disability and require accommodations for testing or coursework, contact Disability Support Services (www.montgomerycollege.edu/dss/) at the Campus you plan to attend.

4

Determine which assessment test is best for your situation or if you are exempt from testing.

You should take the Accuplacer assessment test if your first language is American English or have attended a U.S. school for 10 or more years. Otherwise, take the Academic American English Placement (LOEP) test, for students who have spoken American English as their second (or subsequent) language.

5

Obtain your results by attending an Advising & Planning Program (MAP or IMAP).

  • If you take the MC assessment test, you will choose a date and time to attend an advising session when you take the test.
  • If you are exempt from the MC assessment, call the campus that you will be attending to schedule the advising session:
    • Germantown - 240-567-7739
    • Rockville - 240-567-5088/5063
    • Takoma Park/Silver Spring - 240-567-1555

You must bring one form of photo identification (ID) to the ~2-hour advising session.
