Who Must Complete Assessment Testing?

College assessment tests are used to determine skill levels for placement in reading, English, and mathematics.

Your registration may be blocked unless:

  1. You have completed the course prerequisites as indicated in the MC Course Catalog and the information appears on your MC academic record; or
  2. You have a degree from a U.S. accredited college or university, and that information has been posted to your MC academic record; or
  3. You take an MC assessment test and meet the assessment levels indicated in the MC Course Catalog.

You must take Montgomery College Assessment Tests unless you are exempt!

Exemptions from Testing:
  • Earned a degree from an accredited U.S. college or university.
Students who have been out of college for at least three years and who intend to take a math or English course are advised to take the Accuplacer.
  • Completed a college-level (not developmental) English and/or mathematics course with a C or better at an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Enrolling with a letter of permission from another college or university.
  • Please see additional information on Criteria for Exemption from Placement Testing.
  • Personal interest students taking their first eleven credits, other than English or math.
  • Additional course assessment waivers may be granted (and in some cases, credit awarded) on the basis of scores on specific CLEP, Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate, and SAT II exams.
  • The Rockville Math Department gives more information on placement and exemption to math assessment testing.
  • Please see additional information on achieving Advanced Standing.
  • I-20 applicants from abroad must take the TOEFL or IELTS. Students scoring at least 400 written/97 computerized/30 Internet-based on the TOEFL exam OR 5.0 overall on the IELTS exam may be admitted, but will be required to take testing and possible additional courses in English/ESL upon arrival. For information on how to take the TOEFL, please visit http://www.toefl.org; for the IELTS, please visit http://www.ielts.org.

To take an assessment test, first submit an MC application to the Admissions, Records, and Registration Office, then follow the Next Steps for New Students.
