Germantown
Options for Adult Learners (G.O.A.L.) Program
Support Group for Adult Students
with Multiple Responsibilities
Many
evening, distance and blended courses are already offered at
the Germantown Campus and more are being developed. These
are good opportunities for adult learners who need
flexibility and are self motivated. Check the Schedule
of Classes for specific courses.
Beginning this fall, Germantown will be
offering a pilot online community designed for
multi-tasking adult students who are balancing work,
home, and school and who want to be connected to other
students like themselves. It will be supported by
periodic face-to-face opportunities to get together on
the Germantown campus. The topics are identified by
the
group members and College faculty and staff, as well
as student members themselves, will provide information,
insights, and perspectives. Want insights on courses?
To hear about a “hot program”? To make connections so
that
you can take courses together and cover for each other?
Or just hints on how to successfully and efficiently
navigate MC? These are just of few of the topics
that we can address. If you are interested in
being involved, email us at:
options@montgomerycollege or leave a message at
301-601-6950 and a staff member will respond.
First-Year Experience (FYE) course called "Choices" (DS 107)
This
course is geared to
the adult student who needs to sharpen their "success
skills" as they re-renter the educational environment, but
doing so in a traditional 15-week classroom might not
provide the individual, self-paced format that many adults
want.
At the
workshop the students will be given a self-assessment that
will help them identify areas needed for further
exploration, such as life planning, wellness, career
decision-making, and academic planning. Assignments
and activities are then chosen that will fit busy adult
schedules and individualized needs. Contact the Dean
of Student Development at Germantown for further
Information. (240) 567-1993 or

Starting Out or
Coming Back: Student Development Freshman Experience Course
for Non-traditional Aged and Returning Students: DS 107-26575
Returning to school
from a long absence can be filled with anxiety. It can be
just as scary for returning students as can be for first
timers. Some older students can feel out of place with
younger students. There can be many reasons for this for
example, older students may feel out of touch with the
advances in technology so widely used in education today or
just plain behind the academic curve. This course will
allay those fears by offering the returning, non-traditional
aged student the opportunity to learn among their peers.
Not only will the class offer returning students a
homogenous environment, it will inspire them to share their
rich life experiences with younger students as they pursue
their academic goals.
This First-Year Experience course meets
on Mondays from 5:00-5:50 PM for the entire fall semester.
Professor Jacqueline King will lead this exciting welcome/
welcome back course for non-traditional aged students. For
more information email
Professor King.
