Use of the Instructional Technology Rockville General Purpose Labs

Who May Use These Labs?

The In Tech - R  General Purpose Labs at Montgomery College are for the use of students currently enrolled in specific courses and only for work in those courses. The Writing Center, located in room 20 of the Campus Tower Building, is available for writing term papers, etc.

To Use the General Purpose Labs:

Students are encouraged to read this entire document in order to become familiar with how to use the In Tech - R General Purpose Labs  and their regulations.

  1. Bring a 3.5 inch, 1.44MB diskette or a flash drive to save your class work. We cannot provide them.
  2. Go to the appropriate lab and choose any available workstation that is not marked for special use.
  3. Turn on the computer. Allow the computer to start up fully and completely from the hard-drive - do not insert a diskette until completely started. If the computer is on, shut it down (see #6, below) and restart it - this resets the machine and provides protection against viruses.
  4. It is not necessary to enter a login name or password. The computers are configured to automatically log you on to the network.
  5. If you have not yet viewed it, double-click the Lab Orientation icon on the Windows desktop. This will run a brief introduction to the labs.
  6. When you have finished working:
    • Exit your application fully
    • Remove any diskettes from the A:\drive or from the Zip Drive.
    • Click on START, SHUTDOWN, then click on OK in the pop-up box.

If You Have a Problem, a Question, or Need Help

  • Speak to the Student Aide in the Lab - if an aide is on duty - or go to that building's Lab Office.
  • Do not attempt any repairs yourself - including loading paper into the printers.
