Welcome to the Montgomery College Office of Equity and Diversity site for the Social Responsibility and Public Policy Initiative.This is your online source for information about this Montgomery College Initiative and social responsibility.
This initiative is one of three visions articulated by our president Dr. Johnson, in his inaugural message. The Social Responsibility and Public Policy Internal Advisory Committee (SR&PPIAC) — a diverse cadre of faculty, staff and students — has been working to identify a pedagogical process that includes discovering the principles of excellence that members of the Montgomery College community value for embedding a culture of social responsibility at the College. The Committee is sharing its working definition of social responsibility and continuing to seek your input.
As the Committee uses the term, social responsibility entails reflecting on ways to improve the quality of life for others in the community and then turning these thoughts into actions. We recognize at the outset that many of us at the College are already behaving in a socially responsible way. Our faculty, staff, and students are a critical link in connecting the college to the community. For example, we think of staff who take action to make their workplaces environmentally safe; faculty who elicit and shape discourse on social and political issues as part of their teaching strategy, or who work with students outside the classroom as mentors or club and activity sponsors; students who volunteer or participate in activities to help improve the lives of others; and administrators who mentor young people at Montgomery County Public Schools, or who form partnerships in the community to create training and jobs; and any employees or students who assist underserved populations in the community.
