Summer 2007 Faculty Workshop Retreat: "Second Language Matters: Writing and Non-native Students" Friday, June 15th , 9—2:00 □ Rockville, HU009. Presenters: Eileen Cotter, AELP, Rocvkille; Bette Daudu, AELP, Takoma Park/Silver Spring; Ray Gonzales, AELP, Rockville; Angela Nissing, AELP, Takoma Park/ Silver Spring; Page Whittenburg, AELP, Germantown. Montgomery College students come from all over the world; every one of our classes has at least a few students for whom English is not a first language. How many of us are trained to work with this population? How many of us know enough about their distinct writing processes and issues? What kinds of feedback and evaluation are likely to be most helpful to them? In this first of several workshops to focus on second-language writers, Writing in the Disciplines, the collegewide program that aims to improve student writing, offers a day-long workshop facilitated by all-campus faculty with expertise in English as a Second Language. They will guide us though some of the key areas of consideration for working with second-language writers and give us pointers and practical tools for teaching them most effectively. Bring samples of student writing to share. This retreat will include hands-on-work, resources, and discussion. This and all WID workshops are open to part-time and full-time faculty. Registration is limited to 25. See Eileen Cotter's PowerPoint presentation on some common characteristics of non-native writers See Ray Gonzales's PowerPoint presentation on the usefulness of teaching collocations.
