What is the College Tech Prep Program?
Tech Prep is a national program developed to equip students with the skills they will need to compete in today’s technological world. Beginning in high school, Tech Prep students enroll in selected, career-focused programs that provide some college credit when they attend Montgomery College. In Tech Prep programs, students gain hands-on experience that will provide them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about career choices.

Financial Benefits of the College Tech Prep Program

Are there financial benefits to completing the College Tech Prep Program?

Yes. The high school portion of the College Tech Prep Program is free. That means students earn college credit without tuition and fee expenses. The 2002-2003 tuition and fee rate is $103 per credit, so clearly, students can save hundreds of dollars depending on how many equivalent courses they take. Also, because books are provided during the high school portion of the program, there are additional savings in book charges.

How to Enroll in the College Tech Prep Program

How do students enroll in a College Tech Prep Program?

Students who are interested in enrolling in a College Tech Prep Program should talk to their counselor about their four-year plan. Once registered for a high school Tech Prep class, students are considered enrolled in the College Tech Prep Program. However, students must earn a “B” or better in the high school equivalent courses to receive college credit.

Alternatives if Program is Not Offered at Student’s Home School

What if a program is not offered at the student’s home school?

That’s no problem. The Thomas Edison High School of Technology (TEHST), located in Wheaton, Maryland, offers many programs from which students can choose. Transportation is provided to and from TEHST from every school in the county. Students interested in attending TEHST should contact the counseling office at 301-929-to request an application. When a program is not offered at TEHST or the home school, students have the option of going to another school; however, they must provide their own transportation.
