MARYLAND C.P.A. EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Montgomery College offers all of the required courses.

General Requirements

To take the Uniform CPA Examination, applicants must have satisfactorily completed 150 undergraduate semester hours (or 225 undergraduate quarter hours), including the attainment of a baccalaureate or higher from an accredited institution of higher education as specified in the Maryland Public Accountancy Act (conversion rates: one graduate semester hour is equivalent to 1.5 undergraduate semester hours; one graduate quarter hour is equivalent to 1 undergraduate semester hour; one undergraduate quarter hour is equivalent to .67 undergraduate semester hour).   57 of the 150 semester hours must be in accounting and business-related subjects, as allocated among the following three subject areas: Accounting Education, Business-Related Education, and Ethics Education.

 GROUP I - Accounting Education

An applicant must have successfully completed 27 semester hours (41 undergraduate quarter hours) in accounting subjects.  Applicants must have completed one course (3 undergraduate semester hours/4 undergraduate quarter hours) each in auditing, managerial accounting (or cost accounting), and U.S. Federal Income Tax; nine undergraduate semester hours (12 undergraduate quarter hours) in financial accounting; and nine undergraduate semester hours (12 undergraduate quarter hours) of elective accounting courses.  Please note that AC 201 and AC 202 are pre-requisites for all higher-level accounting courses at Montgomery College.

 Course Subject: AUDITING

(At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

                        AC 215 – Auditing- 4 credits

 Course Subject: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING

            (At least 9 undergraduate semester hours or 12 undergraduate quarter hours)
            Montgomery College Courses:
                        AC 201 – Accounting I- 4 credits
                        AC 207 – Intermediate Accounting I- 4 credits
                        AC 208 – Intermediate Accounting II- 4 credits

 Course Subject: MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING or COST ACCOUNTING

            (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)
            Montgomery College Courses:
                        AC 202 – Accounting II- 4 credits or
                        AC 217 – Cost Accounting- 3 credits

Course Subject: U.S. FEDERAL INCOME TAX
            (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)
            Montgomery College Course:
                        AC 213 – Individual Income Taxation- 4 credits

 Course Subject: ELECTIVE ACCOUNTING COURSES 

            Montgomery College Courses:
                        AC 209 – Advanced Accounting- 3 credits
                        AC 210 – Governmental and Non-Profit Accounting- 3 credits
                        AC 214 – Corporate Taxation- 4 credits

 GROUP II - Business-Related Education

An applicant must have 21 undergraduate semester hours (32 undergraduate quarter hours) in five of the following seven business-related subject areas:
 

  1. Subject Area: STATISTICS
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

                BA 210 – Business Statistics- 3 credits

  1. Subject Area: ECONOMICS
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Courses:
                EC 201 – Principles of Macroeconomics- 3 credits
                EC 202 – Principles of Microeconomics- 3 credits

  1. Subject Area: CORPORATION OR BUSINESS FINANCE
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Course:
                AC 219 – Business Finance- 3 credits

  1. Subject Area: MANAGEMENT
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Course:
                MG 101 – Principles of Management- 3 credits  

  1. Subject Area: U.S. BUSINESS LAW
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Course:
                MG 201 – Business Law- 3 credits

  1. Subject Area: MARKETING
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Course:
                MG 103 – Principles of Marketing- 3 credits

  1. Subject Area: BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
    (At least 3 undergraduate semester hours or 4 undergraduate quarter hours)

Montgomery College Courses:
                SP 212 – Business and Professional Speech Communication- 3 credits

GROUP III - Ethics Education

An applicant must have 3 undergraduate semester hours (4 undergraduate quarter hours) in ETHICS
            Montgomery College Course:
                                AC 216 – Business Ethics- 3 credits

 Experience Requirement

There is a 2,000 hour experience requirement for those applying for an initial license after October 1, 2000.
