Special Event—December 3, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Theatre Arts Arena, Rockville Campus
The Paul Peck Institute for American Culture and Civic Engagement at Montgomery College, together with the History and Political Science Departments of Montgomery College and the Universities at Shady Grove, present veteran ABC and NPR commentator Cokie Roberts speaking on the role of women in the early American republic, based on her latest book, Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation. Ms. Roberts, who will be introduced by Montgomery College President Brian Johnson and former Congresswoman Connie Morella, is an Emmy-Award-winning journalist and bestselling author of several books. In this program, Roberts will examine the accomplishments of women who laid the groundwork for a better American society. This exceptional group includes Abigail Adams, Margaret Bayard Smith, Martha Jefferson, Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Catherine Adams, Eliza Hamilton, Theodosia Burr, Rebecca Gratz, Sacajawea, and others. Mrs. Roberts' books can be purchased at the Montgomery College/Rockville Campus bookstore prior to the event and at the door. RECENT SPECIAL EVENTS HAVE INCLUDED: Following Lewis and Clark, a slide show and discussion by Montgomery College History Professor Michael Petty, who followed the trail of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's 1804-1806 Journey of Discovery; student discussion forums related to Presidents' Day and National Constitution Day; "We Shall Overcome," a living history program commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act; annual celebrations of National Poetry Month; Jan Schaffer speaking on The Era of Participatory Journalism; The Saga of the 2005 Nickel, a presentation by Joe Fitzgerald, designer of the new Jeffersonian nickel; and The Music of Early Maryland, with Dr. David Hildebrand.
