Chapter 2-4: Chemistry of life

1.         Define: matter, compound, atom, element, molecules, ion, cation, anion, covalent bond, ionic bond, hydrogen bond. atomic number, atomic mass and weight, isotopes, ionic bond, nonpolar and polar covalent bonds with examples, hydrogen bond

2.         Know the subatomic particles, their location, charge, weight.

3.     Know how to determine structure, atomic number and atomic mass for atoms (ex. H, C, O, N, S, P).

4.     Define: solution, solvent, solute, pH, acid, base, buffer

5.     Understand the pH scale and how to determine if a substance is an acid or base

 

Chapter 5:  The structure and function of Macromolecules

1.        Know monomers, bonds and function of the four macromolecules.

2.         Formation of polymer : dehydration reaction

3.         Breaking down of polymer: hydration reaction

4.        Know three groups of Carbohydrates and examples  (monosaccharide, di and polysaccharide)

5.        Know the 3 types of polysaccharides.

6.        Compare fatty acids: saturated vs. non saturated.  P.75

7.        What are phospholipids and steroids.

8.        Define hydrophilic and hydrophobic and give examples of molecules for each

9.        Know the general structure of amino acid.  Know the structure of Glycin.

10.      Know protein formation: structure and bonds for each level.

11.      Know what enzymes are and what affects their functioning.

12.     Similarity and difference between RNA and DNA ( structure, function, location in cell)

13.     Parts of nucleotide: nitrogenous base, sugar and phosphate group.

14.     Know the 4(5) nucleotides.
