STUDY SHEET FOR FINAL LABORATORY TEST –BI 107
Fuller
For each lab covered (7-14), review the objectives at the start of the lab and the questions at the end. In addition make sure you can answer each of the questions below.
1. Electrophoresis : definition and principles (2)
Restriction enzymes: - their uses and importance in biotechnology
Be able to identify bands based on DNA sample obtained from different origins.
2. Be able to solve a problem based on electrophoresis results.
(crime, paternity, etc…)
3. Mitosis: recognize phases and know important events.
Cytokinesis : definition and distinguish it in animal and in plant.
4. Developmental stages in animals.
(models or slides of morula, blastula, gastrula)
5. Animal tissues: recognize structure, tissue, function and location in the body.
6. Review the microscope. Magnification.
7. Genetics: Know how to construct and use a Punnett square to predict the outcome of monohybrid and dihybrid crosses. Know the difference between the different patterns of inheritance and know how to do problems with each type.
8. DNA extraction: Review the procedures followed in lab. What happened at each step – how was DNA extraction achieved, what was the purpose of each step.
9. PCR: What is PCR? Why did we use this procedure? What actually occurred during the procedure?
10. Detecting GMO: What process did we follow and why? You need to know what the purpose of the lab was and what results were expected. What controls did we use, what was their purpose, what did a positive result look like, what about a negative result? What proteins did we amplify and why? How do you read the gels? Be sure to thoroughly review the lab.
