Sample of Job Titles and Salary Ranges

  • At National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) most cartographers are hired at the GS-05 or GS-07 level.  They are non-competitively promoted to the journeyman level of GS-11.  Every year, performance plans are reviewed and acceptable performance garners the next grade, i.e. an entry level GS-05 may in two years, with good performance, become a journeyman GS-11. (See the Federal Government pay scale at http://www.opm.gov/oca/06tables/html/gs.asp).

The grade levels beyond that are competitively selected.  In my office, our highest paid cartographic rate is currently a GS-14.
