Alternative Certification for Effective Teachers (ACET) Program

Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools have joined together in partnership to offer an innovative teacher preparation program for talented individuals who wish to become teachers in MCPS secondary schools. This competitive program is designed for Maryland teacher shortage fields at the middle and high school levels including, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish, and Technology Education. NOTE: Important change for the 2010 Cohort: English and Biology have been removed from the list of teacher shortage fields for MCPS for next year. Candidtates will not be accepted in those fields.

Potential teacher candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 24 credits earned in the certification field (degree in the teaching field is preferred). If your degree is from a foreign institution outside the U.S., you must submit an evaluation of it from one of the MSDE-approved agencies. Required test scores and other items must also be submitted. Applications are received from August to October, with interviews and selection in November.

The ACET Institute in January to mid March uses blended instruction (online and face-to-face) for a cohort of 15-20 candidates. A strong support system with MC and MCPS faculty throughout the Internship in April and May benefits candidates' transition into teaching. Following a successful internship, candidates are placed in MCPS secondary classrooms for one year on a Resident Teaching Certificate, while they complete the remaining requirements for a Maryland Standard Professional I Certificate

Information sessions are held periodically at all three Montgomery College campus locations. Each session will include a presentation on the purpose of the program, participant qualifications, classes and program requirements, and the interview schedule, and the time line for each component of the program. A discussion of the application materials and time for questions and answers will also be included in each one-hour session. If you would like to receive additional information on Information sessions and updates, please email acet@montgomerycollege.edu
