My project is to create an instructional manual for the Printmaking area. This manual would exist in both hard copy and CD formats and would be compatible for use with the G4 Macintosh computers that will be installed in the Print shop this Spring. The contents of this manual would include How To sections complete with illustrations, photographs and video clips of various Printmaking processes. Sections that feature most recent developments in digital technologies and how software programs such as PhotoShop, Painter can be utilized with regard to all traditional Printmaking media. An archive of reference images featuring both traditional and contemporary art works in the form of Fine Art prints. A web site directory that would feature Printmaking Galleries; Museums *(emphasis on printmaking exhibitions and collections); supplier of Printmaking materials; Printmaking Organizations (local, national and international); Annual Printmaking Competitions (emphasis on those open to students); Colleges, Universities; Art Schools with Printmaking Programs. Completion of project would require a minimum of two semesters. The benefits of this project would be: learning about various ways to utilize and incorporate computer technology into the Printmaking courses; the completed manual would update and replace the handouts I currently use. Benefits for departments, discipline and college: the students would greatly benefit from having a comprehensive printshop manuals a primary reference tool for the many complex processes involved in the production of limited edition Fine Art Prints. The CD version will be available to load and use on computers that will be installed in the Printshop this Spring. I will be happy to share this experience via a mentoring session and/or written documentation of the contents of the manual and CD or anything else related to the topic with any interested colleagues at Montgomery College.

Counseling

Rockville

I am working with Celia Young. The Counseling faculty teaches a course, Seminar for International Students, DS104. This class is designed for students concurrently enrolled in AELP courses and new to the country (within 2 years). The goal is to teach students the American System of Education, American social norms and deal with issues of acculturation, re-entry, career development, interpersonal relationships, larning styles, study skills and academic planning. The text for this class is a lab manual and written by a number of counseling faculty and has been edited and revised by myself. It is now time for a second major revision. This is required due to the change in our population with respect to their sophistication and life experiences that were not adequately addressed in the present text. Celia Young has a background in writing and she and I have backgrounds in working with students from diverse cultures and have taught this class. We would like to work on this project together since we believe the workload is to extensive for one person to complete in the allotted time and we believe a collaborative effort would produce a superior creative product. We would like to develop an instructor's manual to accompany the text to broaden the scope of the classroom of the classroom experience. We would need training on how to develop a web page and use and development of a course chatroom.. The materials and training needed, are currently available.

Art

Rockville

My project contains a significant technology component and I look forward to collaborating with C T L staff. In addition to learning more about the Elmo and the new Multimedia Station I will need to compile a collection of visuals: scanning slides and transferring quality images onto CD ROM's. Purchasing some commercially available CD ROM's and identifying Internet sites that offer data bases of relevant reproductions would be important. I would like to learn to use the software program Viewprint (already purchased by my Department) which would allow me to display two artworks simultaneously. The African Art survey course will contribute directly to cultural diversity goals in our academic area. By June 30, 2001 all necessary equipment and software should be installed in the Art building so I would not need to rely exclusively on hardware or software available in the C T L. Workshops. I am excited about the project and the possibility of being able to contribute new information and images to our students.

Anthropology and Sociology

I have several goals I would like to accomplish with any release time available. I would like to increase my expertise with the Distance Learning platform. With the switch to WebCT, I would like to take the opportunity to master this technology at a higher level than I did with Blackboard so that I feel more comfortable with site construction. Consequently I could become more involved in transferring Community Conversations to the WebCT format. David Kieffer and I both participate in Community Conversations with an honors module format. We would like to plan some face-to-face learning activities in conjunction with the online groups, which currently compose the bulk of this project. Not only would Community Conversations as a whole benefit from our work together, shared projects with our students would enhance the campus profile of the limited honors offerings at Germantown.

Merrick, Janet

DSS/Student Development

Rockville

I propose to enhance the DSS/Student Development websites to include a Student Guide to DSS and new student orientation information focusing on improving college access to new students. Design all enhancements to be accessible to people with disabilities. Work with other faculty who are designing college websites to teach and ensure the use of good, accessible principles. Offer presentations and one-on-one assistance to faculty/staff/administrators who wish to incorporate accessible web design into their websites. Further develop a website and resources for CA web design faculty to use to incorporate accessible principles into their course materials. I have all the materials for this project. I just need the time. A good start and clear expectations are vital to student success and retention. I see new and returning students with disabilities having increased access and understanding of how to request and receive accommodations and services to access college programs and services. I would offer presentations and one-on-one support to faculty/staff/administrators on accessible web design. This proposal is closely associated with Cultural Diversity.

Mona, Linda

Chemistry

Takoma Park

I am proposing a project incorporating a computer-generated graphing in the laboratory portion of the courses CH 100B, CH 101 and CH 102. All these courses are taught during the fall and spring semesters with multiple sections and during the summer. Currently there is no use of computers in any of these courses in lecture or in the lab. Computer generated graphs automatically do these tasks, so students who have struggled with the aspects of hand drawn graphing will have a greater appreciation of the computer doing these tasks. I am proposing to include one experiment each for CH100B and CH101. An additional experiment for CH101 that includes only a computer generated graph will be added to the curriculum The most significant part of the project will be the creation of directions for the use of the computer software as applied to these experiments.A significant amount of my time will be spent in my learning to use the software packages. The instructional design staff in the C T L and the other C T L Fellows will provide information and expertise that ultimately will make this project more effective than would be possible without them.

Rogness, Linda I

Chemistry

Rockville

I propose to research, develop active learning methods and add them to my classes and show others how to do the same. To create a series of concrete techniques that are successful and make them available to other chemistry faculty via a resource book and to other faculty on campus via workshops. Incorporate concrete learning strategies and study strategies into the already created activities to facilitate a student's learning habits. To research and develop methods to improve students' problem solving skills. To not complain about where students are and help them become what we want them to be. Part of the success of the pre-labs in the laboratory is the premise that the instructor should quit groaning about how poorly prepared the students are and figure out methods to start where they are and bring them up to where I want them to be. I started with the incredibly simple and worked in very small steps to an understanding of the concepts necessary to successfully complete the experiment, perform the calculations and understand why the were doing. The checklists for the reports enabled the students to communicate through writing what they had learned. This feat of magic would have wide application and not just in science. These techniques could be included in the resource book or made available to other faculty through workshops.

Soderberg, William

RD/EL/FC/PC

Rockville

The project that I propose for the two semesters of the 2001-02 school year are 1. To migrate materials from the Blackboard to WebCT and 2, to plan and be co-coordinator for next year's Town Meeting. New materials will be selected and loaded into WebCT in preparation for the online discussions. The college has set as one of its goals the encouragement of community dialogue on contemporary social issues. The topic of human genetic modification is at the center of contemporary controversies that require democratic reflection and discussion. The online dialogue and Town Meeting are a prime example of a program that satisfies this goal. Students and faculty from several disciplines engage in a conversation across discipline lines. The experience has proven beneficial and stimulating to students in various settings, including English composition, literature, philosophy and the sciences.

White, Robert G.

Reading, ESL, FL and Philosophy

Rockville

I would like to develop a visual component for my honors seminars HP251, Shamanism and HP231 Concepts of the Soul for the philosophy/religion segment of the core HonorsScholars Program. I would like to create slides illustrating sacred sites, places of pilgrimage, ritual objects, visual symbols and major historical and contemporary religious figures. Beyond exposing students to the visual dimensions, I hope to usethe images to interconnect with history and art history in the program. I feel this project would require two semesters, slides would certainly facilitate the understanding, comparison and appreciation beyond verbal analyst. Slides would be shared with other members of the department and sets could be conceivably available to students who missed a particular presentation. I have started to integratea few slides in two of my presentations in the Honors Scholars Program. I can imagine every lecture having a visual component. Slide trays and reproduction assistance are the only technical support I need at the moment.

Wolin, Carole

Biology

Takoma Park

This proposal is to create a web site that will provide easy access to Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II (Biology 2 and 4) course materials. This way students can obtain course syllabi, study objectives and supplementary note for each chapter as well as computer based learning activities that can be completed at home or at the campus based computer labs at Takoma Park. Additionally, a handbook to assist new faculty teaching Biology 204 and Biology 205 at the Takoma Park campus will be constructed. This project would allow me to greatly improve the systematic assistance I provide the instructors. It will provide new faculty with lab protocols, hints for successful implementation of the labs and safety precautions. I intend to restructure the remaining lectures to PowerPoint and with the help of the Center for Teaching and Learning, refine my existing PowerPoint presentations to further enhance their content delivery and engage students during lectures.
