Faculty Service Learning Projects

Faculty engaged in Service Learning Fellowships (academic years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005) produced a number of projects to report on their Service Learning experiences:

Congolese Women Project
Esther Schwartz-McKinzie, Assistant Professor, English

Takoma Park students in EN 208: Women in Literature designed this brochure (*PDF) as part of their fundraising efforts on behalf of Congolese women.

Family Fitness Night: A Service Learning Adventure to Accompany HE201: Health and Fitness for Teachers
Debra Guenther, Assistant Professor, Health Enhancement, Exercise Science, and Physical Education

As this poster (*PDF) describes, students in HE 201 developed and presented a Family Fitness Night at the Lakelands Community in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Towards a More Sustainable Future: Incorporating Service Learning
Alessandra Sagasti, Assistant Professor, Biology

This article (*PDF) explains, students in BI 105: Environmental Biology created fact sheets on topics such as electricity and water conservation, alternative transportation, and landscaping. The students used the fact sheets to inform fellow citizens of daily choices they can make to benefit the environment.

Tutoring Experiences in Math 181: Calculus I

Math 181: Calculus I students were required to tutor public school students for a minimum of ten hours over the course of a semester. These slides (*PDF) detail the benefits, difficulties, and questions that remain about the logistics of this service learning component.
