Frequently Asked Questions

When should students submit their documentation?

Documentation may be submitted during the application process if one of the criteria for admissions is weak, such as SAT scores or high school grade point average. The purpose of submitting documentation at this time would be to allow the Admissions Committee to review all data in order to determine that the student is otherwise qualified and not being penalized due to disability.

Documentation that is not submitted during the application process should be presented to the disability support services provider in a timely manner so that the student may receive necessary accommodations.

Colleges with open admissions may encourage students to submit documentation and see a DSS counselor as soon as possible to assist with the assessment, placement and advising process.

Which services are provided for students with disabilities?

The answer to this question will vary according to the types of services available on campus. The service provider may provide an explanation over the telephone, arrange for an interview, or send information in the mail. Some areas that may be addressed include:

  1. Type of service-delivery model adapted by the institution (decentralized and limited, loosely coordinated, centrally coordinated, data-based)
  2. Information needed in documentation
  3. Who is responsible for determination and provision of services
  4. Which services are available
  5. Whether services available will adequately meet the needs of the student

How many students with disabilities are registered with the disability support services office?

The institution may want to have some statistics available from previous years with a breakdown of numbers according to type of disability.

What experience has this college had in meeting accommodations needs?

The answer to this question may include information about classroom accommodations; learning support programs; testimonials from former/current students; and areas that are currently being worked on, but are not necessarily in place.

How does this college handle requests for course requirement exemptions (e.g., foreign language and mathematics)?

The institution may provide its policy, if one is available.
