Admissions Guidelines

Admissions guidelines should include the following:

  1. No questions may be asked regarding disabilities on applications, and no pre-admission inquiries may be made during the application and/or acceptance process.
  2. Disability support services information will be included in application and information packets mailed to prospective students. This information will describe procedures for self-disclosure and the need for accommodation. In addition, the Admissions Office should have available any brochures or fact sheets concerning support services to send out to students who request information (Vogel and Adelman, 1993).
  3. All information distributed to prospective students will state that it is available in alternative formats upon timely request.
  4. All admissions office staff will be aware of services available for students with disabilities. This can be accomplished with inservice training and periodic updates to provide information concerning additional services.
  5. Students who self-disclose during the application process should be referred to the support services office to discuss services available at the institution.
  6. If the Admissions Office is selective, a Disability Services Committee may be established to review supporting documentation that has been submitted with an application. The committee may consist of a disability support services coordinator, other disability support services providers, admissions counselor, faculty member skilled in test interpretation, or any other essential college staff. If a committee is not created, an individual with knowledge of relevant disability issues should be designated to review documentation (Brinckerhoff, Shaw, and McGuire, 1993).
  7. A statement should be placed in the acceptance letters to all students concerning procedures for receiving accommodations on campus.
