Course Substitution Guidelines

Sample course substitution guidelines

Course substitution requests should include the following:

  1. Documentation of the disability.
  2. Documentation of the disability’s effect on the course work for the course in question.
  3. An indication that the student has attempted the course at least once with all needed support services/accommodations and has accumulated a body of evidence supporting the substitution request from tutors, instructors, support services personnel or other relevant sources.
  4. An indication that the student has the support of the disability services office in this request.
  5. A statement that a substitute course for the course in question will not compromise the integrity of the student’s program of study.
  6. A statement of understanding that if the student plans to transfer to another institution of higher learning, he/she has or will investigate the ramifications of the proposed substitution to his/her possible future study at other institutions.
  7. A statement that students who have had a course substituted at any postsecondary state institution in Maryland are eligible for reevaluation of the substitution at the receiving institution without having to take the course first.
  8. A statement that substitution of a course does not reduce the number of credits needed to complete a program of study.
  9. A statement that a course substitution is not automatically transferred to any other program of study.
