Department of English Composition, Literature & Professional Writing - Rockville Campus Montgomery College

Through Montgomery College's composition courses, students have the opportunity to strengthen their critical thinking, reading and writing skills. In our composition program, an emphasis is placed on writing as a recursive process. In our Basic English sequence (EN001 and EN002) and first half of our composition sequence EN 101/A, portfolio assessment is used to promote this concept.

In the Basic English sequence (EN001 and EN002), students will gain competency in using the writing process to compose multi-paragraph essays and discover their own voices. Students will also complete exercises to strengthen their grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and usage in preparation for credit English courses.

In the EN101/A and EN102/109 sequence, students will focus on critical reading, thinking, and analysis while continuing to use the writing process. Students will strengthen their information literacy skills while increasing their aptitude for scholarly research. Synthesizing and incorporating the information and ideas of others using the proper conventions of citation is one outcome of this sequence.

EN109--Writing for Technology and Business is designed to help students understand the processes and products associated with writing used in technology and business. Students will also integrate visual aids into technical documents, conduct scholarly research, and incorporate research material into their writing while using the proper conventions of citation.
