General Information
The English Departments at Montgomery College offer a variety of English courses online. Faculty from each campus have developed fully online courses, blended courses, and accelerated courses; many also supplement their face to face courses with WebCT sites or MyMC sites. All English online classes meet the same expectations and standards as face to face courses. All English distance learning courses are listed under Distance Learning schedules and on the English schedule pages for each home campus.
Common Course Information
Common courses are courses taught based on a standardized template. Common courses are designed and maintained by a group of faculty, and each section of a common course will cover the same core material and the same core assignments although individual faculty may add additional small assignments to the course. Regardless of which section a student takes, he or she will be doing the same things at the same time throughout the semester. Currently EN 101 and EN 102 are common courses. Blended Course Information
Blended courses are courses which blend regular face to face on-campus meetings with online course work. Blended courses have regularly scheduled face to face meetings through out the semester. However, face to face meeting times are reduced, and students are expected to complete a portion of the course work via online. Blended courses are great introductions to fully online learning, and they are a good option for the student who would like to reduce time on campus but who doesn’t want to give up all face to face instructor contact.
Accelerated Courses
Accelerated courses are intensive courses which blend online instruction with mandatory face to face class sessions held on Saturday afternoons. Typically, an accelerated course is held in 7 weeks and requires the same amount of work, and meets the same outcomes, as a traditional 15 week course in a shorter time period. Accelerated courses are recommended for mature learners with strong academic skills. Currently EN 101 and EN 102 are offered as accelerated courses.
Tips for Success in Online English Courses
Online courses are not generally easier than face to face courses. Online courses allow a student to be more flexible about completing work for a course, but they also require a student to be self-disciplined. The English department has compiled a list of tips to help ensure your success in online English courses.
