The Montgomery College Will Power! Festival presents a unique

TheatreCafe:

A Riotous Renaissance Repast and a Screening of Stage Beauty with Mistress of Revels Ms. Cam Magee of the Folger Shakespeare Library who will lead the merriment and discuss “boys playing girls playing boys”
Friday, March 28, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. Rockville Campus Dinner: Theatre Arts Arena -- Movie: Theatre Arts Arena

$15 per person includes food and non-alcoholic beverages. The movie is free.

Set in 1660s England, Stage Beauty follows the fortunes of “Ned” Kynaston, a leading actor, and Maria, his dresser. Since women cannot appear on stage, Kynaston has made the great female stage roles his own. But King Charles II is tired of watching the same old actors -- so he decides to allow real women on stage, and announces that men may no longer play women's parts. This is good news for the talented Maria, who has been secretly performing in a tavern--and for the King's mistress, the stage-struck Nell Gwynne.

But the King’s decrees cause Kynaston to plummet from his position as one of London's most desirable females. He becomes a nobody and is headed for obscurity until Maria takes it upon herself to make a “man” of him again. The film is fictional, but includes historical figures such as “Ned” Kynaston, Samuel Pepys, Charles II and his mistress, Nell Gwynne. Directed by Richard Eyre. Adapted by J. Hatcher from his own play, Compleat Female Stage Beauty. Rated R: includes nudity, some sexual content. 2004. 105 min.
