The Professional Writing courses, part of the English Deparment, provide focused and intensive practical experience in writing for journalism, fiction and poetry. Instructors of these courses bring real-world experience, practical knowledge, and hands-on portfolio assignments to students interested in the writing life.
Journalism and creative writing talents are further enhanced by contributing to our student-run publications, a literary journal, The Red Jacket, and the newspaper The Montgomery Advocate. Our top creative writing students may also qualify to work as staff interns on The Potomac Review, a professional, literary journal. Each semester, we offer exciting events for our students, such as entrance to the national F. Scott Fitzgerald conference held on the Rockville campus, the Conversations and Connection conference, Montgomery College's Books and Ideas lectures, and WillPower, a yearly celebration of Shakespeare, sponsored by the English and Theatre departments.
With other programs in the English Department, we also offer a Poetry Slam, Poetry at Noon events, and the Literature Lecture Series.
