The
American English Language Program (AELP) is a multi-level program designed
to meet the language and academic cultural adaptation needs of non-native
speakers of American English. Students must follow the recommended
courses for English in writing, reading, speaking and listening.
AELP courses also emphasize thinking skills, study skills and communication
skills needed to succeed in college. Students may take other
courses along with the American English language courses depending on their
placement test results.
|
Upon admission, eligible students must take
the Academic American English Placement Test (AAEPT) to determine their
current level of American English proficiency. Students are then
placed at the appropriate levels in core courses that emphasize American
English grammar, composition, reading, speaking, and listening.
In addition to AELP courses, supportive elective courses are available and
at more advanced levels, some content area or "major" area may be taken. Counseling is
always strongly recommended prior to enrolling into such courses. AELP
students can expect to be challenged and simultaneously.
The Writing and Reading Center provides very helpful print materials,
one-on-one tutoring on a walk-in basis, and a computer lab available
to all College students. In addition, the TP AELP faculty welcome
students during their office hours and students may also schedule time
with professors.
