Credit and Non-Credit College Reading

Reading Faculty

The Reading Program offers College Reading I (RD 095) and College Reading II (RD 099).  Students who place into these Non-Credit Reading courses are strongly encouraged to complete these first, but may enroll in courses for which they meet assessment levels or prerequisites.   Reading and Study in College Content Areas (RD 120) is an advanced credit bearing course that emphasizes reading and studying strategies with  academic subject area texts.

All reading courses focus on specific college reading skills, study and testing strategies which enable students to read academic text efficiently, independently and effectively.  RD099 and RD120 integrate critical literacy, logical reasoning  and the application of concepts from reading to testing.   In addition to instruction, there are a variety of library, computer lab and online resources which offer an opportunity to review and apply the reading skills introduced in class.

Assessment and Placement

Lab Requirements

Those students who must take an assessment test include...

  • all new full-time students;
  • part-time students who seek a degree, certificate, or letter of recognition or who plan to transfer to another institution; and
  • students who are taking English courses.

Students assessed at the RD 095 or RD 099 are required to take those courses.   Enrollment in required reading course(s) will take precedence for all part-time students who are also identified as needing English or  Mathematics courses.

Placement into RD 095 is determined by an Accuplacer score between 52 and 65.  Placement directly into RD 099 requires an Accuplacer score between 66 and 78.   A score of 79 and above exempts students from non-credit Reading; the student has the option to take RD 120.   Accuplacer consists of several test areas; only the Reading section  score determines the placement in Reading courses.  Completion of the Reading 095 and 099 courses requires a final grade of C or above.  Click on  Accuplacer ® for more information.

Counselors will assist all students in developing educational plans that best suit individual goals.

RD 095 and RD 099 include a specified number of lab activities to be completed outside of class.  The instructor will designate the activity or activities and/or software program required for the course.  The Takoma Park /Silver Spring Campus offers access to computer labs.  The Writing and Reading Center, (located in the Resource Center) and the new Student Services Center both house computer rooms for student use.

Reading and Study in Content Area Professional Reading (Certification Renewal)
  In RD120, the emphasis is on the transfer and practical application of previously learned reading and study skills to print and visual materials commonly assigned in college course work. Materials selected are discipline-specific and focus on such skills as recognizing organizational patterns, main ideas and support, use of textbook aids, reasoning patterns, systems for reading and lecture note-taking, and discipline-specific comprehension and application methodologies.  This course transfers to some area colleges and universities.   RD238 and RD239 are designed for current and/or prospective classroom teachers.  The courses cover the essentials of the reading processes necessary for elementary and secondary students to become proficient readers. Students will investigate five areas: types of reading, assessment, reading skills, reading instruction, and motivation for reading, and instruction that integrates content with reading goals.. These courses meets the Maryland State Department of Education's reading requirement for elementary and secondary educators.
