Text Box: Biography
Text Box: Dr. Sanjay Rai, Interim Vice President and Provost, Germantown Campus, he was the instructional dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Montgomery College Rockville Campus from 2004-2009, completed a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He has an M.S. in mathematics from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. He also has both an M.S. in mathematics and a B.S. in statistics, physics, and mathematics from the University of Allahabad in India. Rai has an outstanding track record of excellence. Prior to coming to Montgomery College in 2004, Rai was chair of the Department of Mathematics at Jacksonville University, Florida, where he also was a tenured full professor. He previously taught graduate, undergraduate and developmental level courses in mathematics and statistics at four universities. He has contributed to program design and curriculum development at two universities.

Rai has received several awards for teaching and scholarship including the Award for Excellence in Scholarship & Professional Growth, Jacksonville University; the Faculty of the Year Award, Texas A&M International University; the Hillman Yowell Award for Excellence in Teaching, Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, University of Arkansas; and the John W. Keesee Award for Outstanding Work in Teaching and Graduate Studies, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Arkansas. Rai is a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society. He is a graduate of Leadership Montgomery Class of 2009, and serves on the Montgomery County Commission for Women. Rai has also served on the Governor's Taskforce on Aerospace Workers.

Rai has championed the role of sciences in support of economic development by engaging various stakeholders from business, academia, government, and the community. Under his leadership, several nationally competitive grants have been awarded to the Montgomery College science and engineering program, exceeding 2.5 million dollars. Two highly competitive grant awards of special note are: a $471,142 grant from the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) for Project Portal to Success in Engineering (a multi-year program to increase the number of underrepresented students in engineering); and a four-year, $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) for “ACCESS Engineering” (Achieving Community College Excellence, Success, and Scholarship in Engineering).

Rai as the Dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics at the Rockville Campus led advocacy efforts that resulted in full funding for the new Rockville Science Center. He also led the team of architects and worked closely with faculty and staff regarding both overall design as well detailed needs for laboratories and classrooms. Construction for a 140,000 square foot state-of-the-art science building on the Rockville Campus has begun.

Advancing external college relations, Rai was instrumental in obtaining memoranda of understanding with Montgomery County Public Schools, Georgia Tech and George Washington University. Under his leadership there has been significant growth in enrollment in science programs and he has helped bring national recognition to science and engineering programs at Montgomery College. Rai spearheaded involvement in internship/research experiences for undergraduates (REU) which has resulted in several Montgomery College science and engineering students participating in internships and National Science Foundational REU programs across the nation.

Rai has remained active in scholarship. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and other academic publications. His publications are in applied mathematics (modeling HIV using differential equations) and mathematics education. His most recent book Pathways to Real Analysis was published in April 2009. Rai has supervised undergraduate and graduate research projects in mathematical biology and while at Jacksonville University he established the “Research Experiences for Undergraduate Program” in mathematical biology funded by the DuPont Foundation.
