About Diagnostic Medical
Sonography (DMS)
Welcome to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography information page. It is designed to provide information you will need to choose and enroll in the proper program and courses to meet your educational and professional goals.
What is a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
is qualified by academic and clinical training to produce ultrasound images that
provide diagnostic, anatomical information under the supervision of a qualified
physician. A sonogram is a diagnostic procedure that uses high frequency sound
waves to image organs, masses, and fluid accumulations within a patient's body.
The Inside Scoop provides more information on
what sonographers do.
How does this program prepare me for a career?
Upon graduation with
an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) or Certificate, individuals are
eligible to apply for taking their national certification examination offered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) .
The Certificate program is designed for students who are already credentialed in an allied health career (i.e., RT, RN, PTA, etc.).
Upon passing the ARDMS board exam, an individual will then be a registered
sonographer.
What career paths could I follow after completing the program?
After
completing the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, the new sonographer has a
variety of possible imaging venues to explore, including hospitals, outpatient
clinics and doctors' offices. Career opportunities can also expand into
the medical research and education fields. The Frequently
Asked Questions will provide you with more information on career paths.
What is the employment outlook for the future?
According
to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the
employment opportunities are excellent in the career field and are projected to
increase 21 to 35 percent between now and the year 2012. Many positions are
continuously advertised in the metropolitan newspapers, owing to the increase in numbers of hospital procedures and new offices being opened.
Once I
complete the program, do I have to take any other classes?
The field
of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a continuously evolving profession, and
sonographers are expected to maintain the highest competency standards. As
the technology and science progresses, sonographers must advance as well.
Lifelong learning is expected, and is required for
ARDMS registered sonographers.
Continuing medical education is offered in many forms, from seminars to online
courses. Additionally, sonographers may join the
Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers,
which is an organization that is dedicated to sonographer excellence and offers
opportunities for continuing education.
