The Feeling of White American
The view towards Black Americans differed, mainly by territorial differences. The main differences in views were between the southern and northern white men.
The Northern white man was more open to Blacks entering into the work force. They most likely adopted the view of Booker T. Washington, and believed that the black Americans should work hard to achieve personal success. The main focus of the white progressives was to take legal action to bring the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments back to life. The feeling of the Northern whites along with the opening in factory jobs caused what was known as the Great Migration. This was when many Blacks migrated to northern territories.
The Southeast however was not as "open minded" as the North. Southeastern whites supporting any of the black scholars might have been hard to prove. We know that most of the African Americans in this area worked on farms for whites, and most southern whites believed this was the black man's proper place. We know they did not want them to learn a skill like Booker T. Washington believed, nor did they want them to become highly educated as W.E.B. DuBois believed. If the southern whites supported any scholar it would have been Garvey. This was because Garvey pleaded for black isolation from the whites, and with Blacks being a minority in the south, they would have never come to dominate the area.
