First Week: Chpts. 1 thru 5. Essay Question due on the first class of the 2nd week. In the event the first class period of any class week is a holiday, the assignment is deferred to the next regularly scheduled class meeting. All subsequent essay question are due on the first class meeting of the successive week. Please title your submission on the first line as "First Week," Second Week," etc. The first essay question is: "Between the European states, tensions and conflicts increased considerably at the close of the 19th century and into the 20th century.. Specifically, where were these tensions and conficts reflected in the period 1870-1914." Target length - 500 words (more or less) You may use the reverse side of the page if you exceed 500 words, but do not submit more than one sheet of paper (two sides maximum)

Second Week: Chpts. 6,7,10, 11. Essay Question due on first class of this week. "Within five years before or after the turn of the 20th century, a number of imperial wars were fought by the "Big Powers." What were these wars, what precipitated each and what were the consequences of each."

Third Week: Chpts. 8,9,12,13,14. Essay Question due on first class of this week. "Which nation acted most aggressively during the "Five-Week Crisis" in the summer of 1914? In retrospect, which of the European powers proved to be least capable of sustaining the war effort between 1914 and 1918?" Support your responses.

Fourth Week: 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21. Essay Question due on first class of this week. "Why is WWI called the first "total war?" And in retrospect, what nations or peoples "gained" by that conflict?" (i.e., emerged with net gains that could justify the costs?)

Fifth Week: Chpts. 22,23,25,26,27,28. Essay Question due on first class of this week. "To what extent was WWII merely a continuation of WWI? To what extent was it a new conflict?" Support your answers.
Extra credit project on "Tora, Tora, Tora" due.
First Exam second class of this week except for classes meeting one day per week in which case it is on the first class meeting of the 6th week.
Sixth Week: Chpts. 29,30,31,32,33,34. Essay Question due on first class of this week. "1947 was a journalist's delight with "news" being made all over the world. Select the six most important events of that year, from six different countries. Place them in quotations, as though they appeared on the front page of a leading newspaper. State why they were important.

Note: The Essay question may be printed (preferred) or handwritten in ink. It should average about 500 words in length. That's about the number of words than can be placed on a single page in 10 point type, assuming half inch margins all around. The figure 500 is a reference point. More or less may be adequate. However, if you exceed one page you must use the back side of the page and not a second sheet of paper..
And remember - place a complete heading on all work submitted.
