The 1920s were a time of growth and change. A mix of economic change, political conservatism, and cultural conflict made the 1920s a decade of contradictions. The United States was no longer a debtor nation. It was now a creditor nation. New ideas such a prohibition and other moral reforms began to arise. There were also many inventions as well as discoveries that began to be used in the lives of those living during the Roaring Twenties as it would later be called. Such conflicts and contradictions gave rise to a new generation of people with new feelings and ways to express them. These people had their own music, type of dress, and language. This language is called slang. The definition of slang as defined by Webster's Dictionary is an informal nonstandard vocabulary composed typically of coinages, arbitrarily changed words, and extravagant, forced, or facetious figures of speech. Meanings of words are changed over time according to what is happening in the world around certain individuals and for the people of the 1920s it was time to become distinct from the previous generation. No longer could they dress in the same fashions as those that come before them. No longer could the listen and dance to the same music as their mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles. It was time for the to define their generation and to set a trend that would later be followed by generations to come, which was to be as different as possible from the generations past.Different slang phrases were born during the 1920s. Along with each came different meanings. Within these pages are some of the terms used for such words as love, alcohol, the human body, cars, and more.
