Research Brief:
College-Going Patterns of FY 2003 College Institute Participants

During Fiscal Year 2003, 436 high school students took one or more credit classes offered by Montgomery College.  The College Institute, composed of 97 Wootton and 20 Gaithersburg High School seniors taking 15 course sections offered by the College at Wooton High School, included 117 of those students.

The Enrollment Search service provided by the National Student Loan Clearinghouse enabled the tracking of the extent to which those College Institute students enrolled in a college or university in the Fall 2003 semester.  (Approximately 90% of all the colleges and universities in the United States participate in the Clearinghouse.)  This search resulted in the identification of college enrollment in Fall 2003 for 91 (78%) of the 117 participants in the College Institute.  Of those 91 students who were known to go on to college in Fall 2003, 14 (15%) were here at Montgomery College, 40 (44%) went to other colleges or universities in Maryland, and 37 (41%) were enrolled in four-year institutions out-of-state.

These students went to a wide variety of institutions—they were enrolled in 34 different colleges or universities.  In addition to the 14 attending Montgomery College, 32 went to the University of Maryland, College Park; four went to the University of Maryland Baltimore County; three went to Carnegie Mellon University; three to University of Michigan; and three to the University of Southern California.
