Montgomery County has a large and diverse ethnic population which is reflected in enrollments at the Montgomery College campuses. The college mission to bring a greater awareness of global perspectives to the student body and community has led to the development of an International Education Program that provides opportunities through a variety of activities to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
The International Education Program, developed and staffed by faculty, addresses this mission through five areas: EDUCATION, EXTENDED STUDY ABROAD, CULTURE, TRAVEL and, CONTINUING EDUCATION.
Through EDUCATION: The International Studies Option provides students with the opportunity to explore careers in foreign service and international business. Many faculty have, where appropriate, internationalized their courses to reflect the college’s mission to emphasize global issues.
Through EXTENDED STUDY ABROAD: For students desiring an in-depth experience abroad, the college provides the opportunity to study abroad for a semester, year, or summer in 30 different countries through the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS). These accredited academic institutions abroad provide programs, courses, room, and board for students. Montgomery College students have attended colleges in England, France, Italy, Germany, and Israel. The preperation for attending a college abroad must be initiated a semester in advance of departure with the Office of International Education.
Through CULTURAL activities: The richness of our international student enrollment continues to enhance our understanding and appreciation of each other through daily contact. The International Education Program showcases world cultures through programs of exhibitions, performances, lectures, films, and culinary events.
Through TRAVEL: To enhance student knowledge of the world, both domestic or abroad, the faculty in select credit courses offer oppurtunities for in-depth study through field trips, both domestic and abroad. These study/travel trips are taken during the semester, between semesters, during spring recess, between the academic year and summer, and during the summer sessions. Faculty have taken study groups of students to Russia, China, Mexico, England, Jordan, Sinai, Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and St. Croix. Each year new Study/Travel locations are offered. The International Education office publishes brochure-mailers highlighting the courses with the study travel component. Call the International Education office to be placed an the mailing list.
Through CONTINUING EDUCATION: The student who does not desire to take the 15-week credit course but who wants to participate in the travel experience may do so through the non-credit Continuing Education Program. This Program offers several pre-travel meetings to provide backgroundinformation for the trip. Contact Continuing Education at 240-567-5188.
