How To Be at Your Best On Camera

What to wear:

  • Business Attire looks best AND a tie, jacket lapel or button-up shirt offers a perfect place to put a clip–on microphone
  • Avoid turtlenecks.  They can be a problem for proper placement of microphones.
  • Avoid small, busy patterns (herringbone, small pinstripes, etc).  These can appear to move when videotaped.
  • Do not wear white.  Wear a colored shirt with a suit.  Pastel colors are okay.
  • If you have very dark skin, pick a medium toned color like a gray or a tan instead of light pastel colors or off white.
  • If you have very light skin, avoid wearing black.  Try Navy Blue, dark brown or dark gray if you want to wear a dark color.
  • Do not plan to wear a hat

Make up:

  • If you are comfortable wearing make-up, you may want to apply a translucent powder to help prevent shininess.

Tips for appearing on camera:

  • Relax, ignore the lights and camera. The host(s) will guide you to do the right thing at the right time.
  • When in doubt, look at the person who is speaking.
  • Think of this as a conversation between you, the interviewer/other guests.   It is not an interrogation; RELAX and try to enjoy yourself.
  • Firmly grip the bottom of your suit jacket and pull down as you are seated to prevent it from having unnatural gatherings around the collar.
  • Ladies, when you are wearing a skirt, if you must cross your legs, do so at the ankle, not the knee.
  • Turn off your cell phone and pager (not just the ringer) or ask to have them held in another room.
