About Us
The Mathematics Department at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus has been bringing mathematics instruction to students for over fifty years. The Campus itself is located on the grounds of the former Bliss Electrical Institute, which was founded by an associate of Thomas Edison! The long history of commitment to technical, applied and pure mathematics has deep roots, indeed. The Mathematics Department recognizes the significant contributions of technology to contemporary instruction, and uses graphing calculators, a variety of software packages, and online support for its mathematics offerings.
The Takoma Park/Silver Spring mathematics curriculum is rich and vibrant and encourages a wide array of student goals and interests. Courses range from prealgebra through multivariate calculus, differential equations and linear algebra. Each semester’s offerings also include statistics, applied calculus, liberal arts mathematics, mathematics in support of prospective teachers, and special honors work for selected students.
Classes are offered on a wide range of days and times to make it convenient for students to achieve a flexible schedule that accommodates their family and work commitments. Classes are scheduled from 8 am throughout the morning and early afternoon and continue with evening sections, plus some offerings on-line or on Saturdays. The Department employs a full-time instructional assistant and tutors for additional support of student learning. A fulltime administrative assistant, who received her first degree from Montgomery College, enjoys answering student questions.
The Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus has a student math club. Students may participate in the yearly prestigious AMATYC Contest. Our campus team has won the regional AMATYC competition. Awards for excellence are given each spring at the Campus Honors/Phi Theta Kappa Ceremony.
Our faculty members are highly experienced teachers with a broad range of educational backgrounds and experiences. Some hold Ph.D.s in mathematics or mathematics education. Two faculty members have been MAA Project Next fellows. The faculty have previous experience in industry as well as in such government agencies as NIH, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The faculty members’ backgrounds include international as well as U.S. upbringings and educations. The people in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Mathematics Department are in the business of offering outstanding, responsive instruction, and fostering student learning. We welcome you!
