Reading Programs

Your instructor may recommend work in one or more of the programs listed below. Your instructor will provide details on which programs to access and how to complete assignments.

Your instructor may assign you to a software program available in the lab. Please be advised that these programs cannot be accessed over the Internet. Programs that are followed by ** require use a CD or  instructor/staff assistance to utilize the materials.  Your instructor will provide details on which programs to access and how to complete assignments.

  • Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts (Eric Lease Morgan) For native English readers. Abbot, Alcott, Alger, Aristotle, Austen, Browning, and many other authors.
  • Diascriptive: Available in the Center, the program's key skills include: Details, Inference, Main Idea, Sequence, Vocabulary .(A variety of levels.) Request help in signing into the system.*
  • Do You Speak American? PBS for high school and college students. Includes five units based on the three-hour program. Web site resources are available free of charge. *
  • The English Language Zone : University of Victoria, British Columbia - English Language Centre Study Zone.*
  • Interlink On-Line Lessons - Reading Skills (Mark Feder)*
  • JCU Effective Reading (UK):  Shows how to test reading speed and provides a range of techniques to help readers read faster and more effectively.
  • John`s ESL Community (John Erskin) Interactive exercises and reading strategies that will help improve reading comprehension.*
  • Key Skills Course (UK): This British site contains interactive three key skill areas:Communication, Application of Number, and Information Technology.*
  • Mindquest Academy: An online course to help you develop the skills to be a successful reader in college.  Modules include:  Reading Descriptive, Explanatory, Persuasive Text  Narrative text, and Charts, Graphs, and Tables. **
  • Ohio ESL Reading Skills:  A collect of well organized reading activities sorted by levels.*
  • Prentice Hall Index of Interactive Tutorials: An interactive tutorial site that presents modules on Critical Thinking and Reading, Visual Analysis, Communications and Geographic Literacy.
  • Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab: Reading/listening exercises, and more.*
  • Readings from America- Today and Tomorrow: (William M. Balsamo) Readings with Comprehension Questions
  • Skill Wise(BBC):  Provides a wide range of literacy skills (UK).  *
  • SAT Prep: A vocabulary oriented site that students prepare for the vocabulary section of the new SAT exam. The site is also useful for anyone that would like to improve their English vocabulary.
  • Skills Bank 4:  Available in the Center, the program is structured into lessons that address the following skill areas: vocabulary, word knowledge, reading comprehension, dictionary use, using references, consumer information, using maps, charts, and graphs.
  •  TV411: Linked to a television series for adults who want to strengthen their literacy skills, the site contains interactive material on reading, writing, math, vocabulary, and learning. *
  • My Reading Lab:  This site accompanies some Printence Hall texts. New!
