Dr. Jeff Mangels

Jeff Mangels (b. 1969) holds the D.M.A. in composition from the University of South Carolina, the M.M. in composition from James Madison University, and the B.A. in music theory and composition from Virginia Tech. His composition teachers include Gordon (Dick) Goodwin, John Hilliard, Glenn Smith, and Kent Holliday.

A native of Herndon, Virginia, he began piano study at the age of 9 and became involved with composition while in high school. His works have been performed in the United States and an orchestral work will be programmed in Europe in the next year. He has been recognized for distinction in composition by noted composers including Lowell Liebermann and Chen Yi. In 1997, he received the Linda Betts Frazier award for outstanding graduate composer at James Madison University.

His compositions include works for orchestra, choir, voice, percussion, chamber groups, electronics, and solo piano. His orchestral work, The Trial, will be recorded this year on ERM media’s “Masterworks of the New Era” vol. 11 conducted by Robert Winstin and performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The Czech Philharmonic will also be programming this work on their upcoming concert schedule. The CD will be released in June 2006 and will be available through Tower Records, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.com among other retailers.

Active also in research, Dr. Mangels has done work on improving the notation of harmonics on bowed stringed instruments.
