MC Symphony Orchestra

About the Orchestra
Directed by Stephen Czarkowski, the Montgomery College Symphony Orchestra brings together a unique group of talented musicians from Montgomery College and local high schools who play together with college faculty and professional performers (noted Washington, D.C., area performing artists) during weekly rehearsals and performances. This exciting mix of musical talent provides an unrivaled mentoring relationship for developing musicians. Montgomery County Public Schools high school students also earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours through their performances to the community in the MC Symphony Orchestra. For more information, call (240) 567-5209. See below for audition information.

Audition Requirements
The Montgomery College Symphony Orchestra invites musicians who play any orchestral instrument—including talented high school students who would like to have college-level playing experience in their curriculum vitae—to take MU171 College Orchestra on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. at the Rockville campus. MCPS students may earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for appropriate volunteer activities associated with their participation in the orchestra. Advance sign-ups for auditions are required. Please call the Music Department at (240) 567-5209 for more information.

All musicians, new and returning, must audition each semester. Auditions usually will be held either during the end of a semester for pre-registrations or at the beginning of a semester. We are always looking for talented performers on the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, timpani and percussion, harp, violin, viola, cello, and bass. If you perform on an instrument other than one listed here and are interested in talking with the conductor about the possibility of auditioning on that instrument, please contact the music department to get in touch with the conductor.

Here is what to expect for an audition (subject to change - please check with conductor to be sure):

  • Tuning: Musicians will be given a concert-pitch “A” for tuning your instrument.
  • Solo (without accompanist): A solo music selection of musician’s own choice.
  • Sight-Reading: Sight-read parts from orchestral/instrumental literature comparable in difficulty to orchestra repertoire.
