Teacher Seminars are planned for 2007!
General Course Description
- Work with experienced archaeologists and educators from Montgomery College, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission for Montgomery
County (MNCPPC-MC), Mount Vernon and Historic St Mary's City to learn ways of integrating archaeology into the
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Curriculum (i.e., Standards
and Indicators).
- Teacher participating in the workshop will attend a 6-day field archaeology & eductaion course
where they will participate in excavating at archaeological and historic sites in Maryland. The curriculum covers an introduction to African American, European American and Native American cultures.
Shorter workshops are also available.
- Educators will do fieldwork to get hands on experience
in the scientific methods of archaeology. Many of these methods have
applications in math, science, social studies and art curriculum standards.
- An introduction to archaeology, ethics and preservation will be provided. Tetrault will teach a separate section on teaching archaeology using non-invasive methods will be provided.
- Specialists have been invited to lecture and introduce
topics in archaeology and material culture such as: historical ceramics,
prehistoric artifacts, African American archaeology in the Chesapeake,
ethics, and preservation.
- Workshop includes a trip to an African American site
in Montgomery County and to Mount Vernon.
- Teachers will receive background readings pertaining
to the topics we discuss. They will also have the opportunity to review
and use an archaeology curriculum module. This module works with the
Maryland State Voluntary Social Studies Standards. All entrance fees
to parks are covered.
