Course,
Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement Grant
Facilitating the Comprehension of Biological Principles
through the Creation of Modules Utilizing Interactive Computer Assisted
Instruction and Hands-on Investigative Exercises

The rationale
for the proposed interactive modules originated from the high attrition
rate of students enrolled in introductory science courses at Montgomery
College.
Montgomery
College serves a high percentage of economically and educationally disadvantaged
students. The high attrition rate, as determined through exit evaluations,
student surveys and student performance, as well as the lack of demonstrable
transfer of pertinent biological principles (determined by the Division
of Basic, Applied and Health Sciences at Montgomery College) has been linked
to inadequate understanding and an inability to apply certain concepts in
five areas of biology. The affected biological areas are:
Life at the chemical and cellular level
Cell biology: metabolism and replication
Genetics
Diversity of Life
Ecology
