Physics
The Physical Sciences Department at Takoma Park/Silver Spring offers
three Physics courses.
Courses Offered:
PH 161
General Physics I: Mechanics and Heat
A three-credit calculus-based physics course that explores the
fundamental laws of motion, force and energy, particle collisions,
rotational mechanics, gravitation, thermodynamics, and kinetic
theory. This course is primarily designed for engineering majors;
chemistry majors should check with their transfer institution
before taking this course. Prequisites: MA 181 and conconcurrent
enrollment in MA 182, or the consent of the department. This is a
Natural Science Non-Labratory Distribution class. (Three hours
lecture, one hour discussion each week.)
PH 203
General Physics I (non-engineering)
The first non-calculus-based general physics course with emphasis
on principles and development of scientific methods applied to
physical relationships. Students of biology, pre-pharmacy,
pre-medicine, optometry, and other health-based programs usually
take PH 203. Chemistry majors should check with their transfer
institution before taking this course. Prerequisites: knowledge of
trigonometry or consent of department. Assessment levels: EN
101/101A, MA 100, and RD 099. (Three hours lecture, four
hours laboratory/discussion each week.)
PH 204 General Physics II (non-engineering)
The second semester of a non-calculus-based physics course with
emphasis on principles and development of scientific methods
applied to physical relationships. Biology students and
pre-professional students who are required to have 8 credits of
physics usually take PH 204; chemistry majors should check with
their transfer institution before taking this course. Prequisite: PH
203 and knowledge of trigonometry. (Three hours lecture, four
hours laboratory/discussion each week.)
