Light curves for type I and II supernova.  SN1987A does not fit either type exactly, but it progenitor was a blue giant not a red giant like is expected in a Type II, which is thought to not involve binary stars where one of it members a WD, White Dwarf, that exceed the Chandrasekhar limit through accretion in a binary system.
