Science Club
Name:
The official name of this organization
shall be the Science Club of Montgomery College at Takoma Park. This name
being a bit long, though, it shall customarily be referred as the "The
Science Club."
Purpose:
The purpose of the Science Club is to
promote interest, understanding, and knowledge of the scientific world
throughout the college and local community. The area of emphasis shall
include astronomy. The club shall seek to foster the type of honest skepticism
that is necessary for life long learning.
Service:
The Science Club is to serve its member
and local community to help them understand the universe in a scientific
way. This service is to be accomplished through regular club meetings,
special public seminars (open to all in the community), and field trips.
Members will also have access to specialized workshops on becoming mentors
and being mentored, improving science study skills, and fostering relationships
with fellow members that have the collective focus of science as an advocate
or vocation.
Membership:
The Science Club is open to all students
of Montgomery College both full and part-time, with an interest in knowing
and understanding more about the universe. The club also offers honorary,
nonvoting, membership to anyone who has previously been a member of the
Physical Science Club or the Physics Club at Takoma Park, but is currently
not a registered student this semester, but is willing to come to meetings.
A minimum grade point average is not required of member. Students are expected
to become better in part by their participation in this academically oriented
club.
Officers:
The Science Club shall have a President,
Vice-President, Secretary, and Student Senate Representative. These officers
should be elected at the first meeting of the year and can be removed and
replaced if they do not perform their duty satisfactorily as judged by
the members attending the scheduled club meetings. The Student Senate Representative
is responsible for attending all InterClub Council meeting, or securing
an officer of the club or in extreme emergency another regular member of
the club to attend the Student Senate meetings. The Student Senate Representative
is responsible for representing the clubs financial interest in that allocation
of student activity funds and coordination between other recognized clubs.
All officers must have at least a 2.0 grade point average and are expected
to do much better than this minimum.
Meeting:
The frequency, time, and place of the
meetings shall be decided by the members of The Science Club, but it is
recommended that the club meet at least monthly (September through May)
and perhaps more frequently than that. The officers will also have to meet
together to make sure that meetings are planned so significant tasks can
be done each meeting to further the purposes of the club. In addition to
regular meetings the club should plan special seminars, and members field
trips.
Dues:
No dues are required to become members
of the The Science Club: however each member must supply their own funds
for any catered occasion or field trip.
Faculty/Staff Advisor:
The advisor to the The Science Club shall
be any interested staff or faculty member of the College, he/she shall
serve a one year term which is renewable each fall semester.
Rules of Order:
In the business meeting part of regular
meetings something closely approaching Robert’s Rules of Order should
be followed.
Adoption:
This Constitution shall be considered
adopted on the organizational meeting on provided officers are elected.
Amendments:
This constitution may be amended by two-thirds
vote of the members on two successive meetings after having been adopted.
Statement of Original Approvals:
This constitution will become official
only after approval which is duly noted in the official records of the
Student Senate.
Statement of Conformity
The The Science Club shall abide by the rules and regulations of the College and its official agencies.
