Area Description:
The Humanities Area at Rockville offers a diverse
range of disciplines that develop analytical, reasoning, and writing skills by
exploring the human experience – our ideas, values, and traditions. Departments
include English Composition, Literature, Professional Writing, American English
Language Program, Reading, English as a Second Language, Foreign Languages,
American Sign Language, and
Philosophy. Cognizant of the diverse needs and interests of MC students, Area
programs and services are flexible, innovative, and focused on
providing an enabling environment for student growth, inquiry, and success.
Faculty are involved in a variety of professional activities to remain current
in their fields, providing stimulating and challenging courses that prepare
students for further studies and employment opportunities.
Both traditional classroom-based courses and various distance learning course
formats provide students ever-increasing access to Humanities courses. In
addition to expository writing, ethics, semantics, news writing, international
film, and poetry, new courses are added annually, including Asian Thought,
Chinese Language and Literature, and Women and Literature. To broaden their
global understanding and appreciation, students may study Russian, Italian,
French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Latin. The Honors Program,
Montgomery Scholars, International Studies, and Women’s Studies are college-wide
programs located within the area that further enhance student learning and
development.
The Area provides numerous opportunities for student involvement, including The
Red Jacket, a student-run arts and literary journal produced by the Professional
Writing faculty; Poetry Slam!, an increasingly popular celebration of student
and faculty creativity; and Will Power!, MC’s annual Shakespeare Festival.
Mentored by area faculty, honors students participate in a variety of local,
regional, and national competitions. MC students have won prestigious
scholarships and awards, including top honors and distinctions at the
prestigious Beacon Conference, an annual event for scholars at two-year
colleges. The Writing and Reading Center provides tutoring and
technology-enhanced language laboratory services to a growing number of
students.
