Area Description:
Welcome to the area of Social Sciences, History, Psychology,
Education, Health Enhancement, Exercise Science, Physical Education and the Evening Weekend Office. With
approximately 45 full-time and 120 part-time faculty, we offer day, evening, and
Saturday classes in traditional classrooms, as well as distance learning
formats.
Our Social Sciences area includes the Departments of Psychology, Sociology,
Anthropology, and Criminal Justice, where the focus is on the analysis of
behavior, culture, society, and the diversity of human existence. Practical
problems in these courses encourage students to develop conceptual, analytical,
and critical thinking skills that foster and support academic success.
In our History and Political Science Department, students are provided with
insights into the meaning of history and political science, and the purpose of
historical inquiry. Students are encouraged to think independently and
critically, and to develop strong communication skills that extend beyond the
fundamental skills of reading and writing.
The Education Department and the School of Education provide high quality educational programs, consisting
of both academic courses and field-based learning experiences, that prepare
students as educators for diverse and inclusive communities, developing the
knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for the teaching profession.
Our Department of Health Enhancement, Exercise Science and Physical Education,
seeks to instill in our students a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
Our focus is on helping students identify and remediate risk behaviors while at
the same time adopting health protective behaviors that include exercise, proper
nutrition, and stress management. Our programs in health education, gerontology,
and exercise science, as well as our 'Healthy Campus' initiatives, are designed
to help our college community attain this goal.
The Evening Weekend Office provides facilities and services for part-time faculty members at night and on weekends when staff is not available in the departments. The part-time instructors can prepare for class, exchange ideas, or enjoy a cup of coffee. Because of the cordial atmosphere, many instructors also use the facilities during the day.
