| Dr. Judy E. Ackerman Vice President and Provost Rockville Campus |
Dr. Judy E. Ackerman has served as Vice President and Provost of the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College since January 2003. She is the chief academic officer for a campus of approximately 17,000 students. At the Rockville campus she provides vision and leadership to promote student success. During more than 30 years of service at Montgomery College, Dr. Ackerman has served as a Professor of Mathematics, Collegewide Honors Coordinator, Math Center Coordinator, Chair of Mathematics, and Instructional Dean of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.Although there have been many changes in the Rockville Campus over the years, Dr. Ackerman is particularly proud of the construction of the new Rockville Science Center which is expected to be open for classes starting with the fall 2011 semester. This important project started as a project to renovate the two existing science buildings; under Dr. Ackerman’s leadership it expanded to include a large, new science instructional laboratory building along with the renovated Science East and Science West. The new building will be the College’s first L.E.E.D. (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System) certified building. It, along with major outdoor sidewalk work is transforming the look of the Rockville Campus to make it an even more inviting place. She is nationally known for her work in community college mathematics education. Dr. Ackerman served as President of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), an organization that consists of 44 affiliate groups and is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a forum for the improvement of mathematics instruction in the first two years of college. She serves on committees of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Dr. Ackerman has published numerous articles and presents nationally on mathematics related topics, including math anxiety, public school partnerships with community colleges, and gender equity in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. She was a member of the NCTM delegation to the International Conference on Mathematics Education in 2008 and 2004. As Project Director for a MAA Tensor Foundation Women and Mathematics Project Grant Dr. Ackerman established the College’s Sonya Kovalevksky Day program for middle school girls and their teachers. She served as Co-Principal Investigator for a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technical Education (ATE) Planning grant, and Principal Investigator for a NSF Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement grant that brought the first computers to the Rockville Department of Mathematics and introduced computer laboratory projects into a general education mathematics course. In 2009, Dr. Ackerman received the Montgomery College On Her Shoulders We Stand Award, and the Smart CEO BRAVA Women Business Achievement Award. Dr. Ackerman was also recognized with the following awards related to teaching mathematics: the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Outstanding College Professor Finalist, the George B. Thomas Scholarship Award, and the Association of Community College Trustees Northeast Region Faculty Member Award. Dr. Ackerman is a board member of Rockville Economic Development, Inc (REDI) and the Rockville Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Rockville Mayor’s Transition Advisory Group (2008). She served as honorary co-chair of the American Cancer Society 2008 Relay for Life (2008) that was held on the Rockville campus. She is also a volunteer with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, National Chapter. Dr. Ackerman earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and an M.A.T. in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Her bachelor’s degree is from Queens College (CUNY) in Mathematics, with minors in Physics and Education. She also attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. |
