Project Portal to Success in Engineering-- The Science, Engineering and Mathematics (SEM) area was recently awarded a three-year grant totaling $471,142 from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) – Comprehensive Program. This grant program builds on empirical data and adapts lessons learned to develop programs and strategies to increase the numbers of women and minorities pursuing engineering degrees. The project includes mentoring, academic coaching, supplemental instruction, and undergraduate research as part of a holistic and integrated approach to student success. Other special area initiatives include: SEM Exchange-A series of presentations by Montgomery College faculty and staff on recent advances and issues in the sciences and mathematics. Download brochure here...AS in Science- Montgomery College offers an Associates of Arts in Science degree for students who plan to transfer to a four year college to major in Life Sciences, Math, or Physics. Biomedical Scholars- Students in their senior year of high school are eligible to apply to become a Biomedical Scholar. This program, funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, is for highly motivated students interested in a career in the natural or biomedical sciences. Biomedical Scholars participate in a six-week, pre-freshman Summer Bridge program and are part of a small learning community of peers and faculty. CSEM Scholars- The CSEM (Computer Science, Engineering & Mathematics) Scholars Program is funded through a National Science Foundation grant. This program provides scholarships for Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics majors based on financial need. CSEM scholars participate in a special seminar, PC 169X, in which they prepare for internships and get to meet practicing scientist and engineers. Montgomery College Student Journal of Science and Mathematics- These students papers that represent excellence and academic achievement in science or mathematics.are now available on-line, and a print version is also being prepared. |
