Dr. Maria Sprehn
Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Dr. Maria Sprehn, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, focuses on engaging students with current issues in anthropology and incorporates her anthropological research and field experience into her teaching. She received her Ph.D. and MA degree in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico and her BA in Anthropology from the George Washington University. Dr. Sprehn has conducted fieldwork with Rarámuri (Tarahumara) women in Chihuahua, Mexico, where she focused on issues of cultural revitalization. She has led museum collection based projects including an online exhibit for the Smithsonian about textiles from the North American Southwest. She has written about and contributed to museum exhibits about Mexico's Casas Grandes pottery. Her interest in digging up the past has taken her to archaeological digs in Spain, Portugal, New Mexico, and the Washington, DC area. Dr. Sprehn has taught anthropology part-time at Montgomery College since 1997 and joined the department full time in August 2008.
