DSM-VI's
Quick Tips and Help
Using the Tables
of Contents
This publication has six
linked tables of contents (TOCs). These TOCs
provide navigational links to the documents
included within. Each main TOC provides links to
all chapters, appendixes, and other text content
of the publication.
The TOCs enable direct
access to documents without performing a search.
The TOC lists are organized as a document
hierarchy of collapsible folders (represented by
book icons); double-click on the folders to open
or close them. Inside the book folders are the
actual documents; double-click on the page icon
and the selected document will appear in the
window on the right.
From the "Contents" section
of the Main Screen, click one of the publication
buttons to display its TOC. To switch to another
TOC displays while viewing a publication's TOC,
click the tab of the desired publication that
appears at the bottom of the TOC display. You
can also return to the Main Screen and choose a
different publication button.
Returning to the
Main Screen
You can return to the Main
Screen at any time. There are two ways to do
this: 1) choose Main Screen from the View
drop-down menu, or 2) click on the View Main
Screen button at the far left of the Toolbar.
Viewing a
Document
Documents are displayed
according to the current Preferences setting by
default. To enlarge or reduce the displayed
document, you can use the Zoom - and Zoom +
buttons on the Toolbar or choose different Zoom
options from the View drop-down menu.
You can adjust the width of
the TOC window and the document window by
clicking on the border between them; keep your
mouse button pressed while dragging the border
to the right or left. (For example, you could
make the TOC window smaller so that the window
containing your document is bigger.)
Scrolling a
Document
After a document is
displayed in the Document Window, you can use
various tools to scroll to different parts of
the page or the document.
- To scroll the
document, use the Scroll Bar and its arrows,
or the Page Up, Page Down and Up, Down
arrow keys on your keyboard. Use the
horizontal and vertical Scroll Bars to move
to the left, right, top, and bottom of the
document.
- To reach a specific
page, click on the Scroll Box (the moving
part of the Scroll Bar) and keep your mouse
button pressed while dragging the Scroll
Box. The page number of the current page
(out of the total number of pages) is
displayed in a box beside the Scroll Bar.
Release the mouse button when you reach the
desired page.
- To move through the
document line by line, click the Up arrow or
Down arrow at the top and bottom of the
Scroll Bar, or use the Up and Down arrow
keys on your keyboard. To continuously
scroll line by line, hold the arrow or key
down.
- To move through the
document by portions of a page, press the
Page Up or Page Down keys on your keyboard.
Both the bottom of one page and the top of
the following page are displayed at the same
time.
- To move through the
document page by page, click the Next Page
arrow or Previous Page arrow at the very
bottom of the Scroll Bar, under the Down
arrow.
- To move to the next or
previous document, click the Next Page arrow
or Previous Page arrow on the Scroll Bar
when the bottom (or top) of the document is
reached.
Using Hyperlinks
Hyperlinks are marked areas
in the documents that enable you to directly
access a specific related location within the
same document or within another document.
Underlined or colored text (the link source)
denotes that a hyperlink exists, and clicking on
it will transport you to the related text (the
link target).
To activate a hyperlink,
hover the mouse pointer over the hyperlinked
(underlined or colored) text. The mouse pointer
changes to a hand. Double-click to bring the
target document to the viewing area as a new
window. You can go back to the previous location
by choosing Back from the Navigation drop-down
menu or by clicking on the Backward button on
the Toolbar.
Hyperlinks included in this
product
- In DSM-IV-TR, links
from the beginning of each section
describing a diagnosis take you to the
related criteria set.
- Links from each
criteria set take you to the beginning of
the text section for that diagnosis.
- The DSM-IV-TR
Classification is linked to the
corresponding text for each diagnosis.
- Alphabetical and
numerical listings of DSM-IV-TR diagnoses
and codes (Appendixes E and F) link to the
corresponding text sections for each
diagnosis.
- Cross-references to
other sections and chapters containing
related material link directly to those
locations.
- Reference citations in
the text link directly to the reference
lists.
Printing
Documents
You can print the displayed
document. When printing, you can choose to print
the entire document (DO
NOT PRINT THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT HERE), the
current page, or a range of pages.
Alternatively, you can print a list of documents
retrieved as a result of searches or documents
you have selected in the TOC.
Using Bookmarks
DSM-IV-TR Plus includes a
Bookmarks list, which is initially empty.
Bookmarks enable you to add placeholders in
documents, for quick access and future use.
Search expressions can also be saved as
Bookmarks. Refer to the Help drop-down menu or
Program Group for instructions on adding TOC
entries or specific page locations to the
Bookmarks list. The Bookmarks list is saved when
you exit the publication.
Searching
The INSIGHT search
capability is powerful. Detailed information on
searching can be accessed from the Help
drop-down menu or Program Group.
INSIGHT searching is set up
by Categories. A Category is a group of
documents within the publication that have
similar contents or arrangement. Each Category
has a Search Form with fields relevant to the
information within the documents. If Categories
have common fields, you can search more than one
Category at a time.
You can search for data
within one publication at a time or across any
combination of the six publications in one
search.
Searching each publication
separately focuses the search on a specific type
of data. From the "Search" section of the Main
Screen, click the relevant publication (DSM-IV-
TR, Diagnostic Criteria, APA Practice
Guidelines, American Psychiatric Glossary,
Principles of Medical Ethics, or Opinions of the
Ethics Committee) button. Then click the main
Search button below the publications buttons.
The available search fields are then presented
for that publication or combination of
publications.
Simple or General Search:
If you choose to search a combination of
publications, you will see a Full Text box.
Enter a word(s) (click the arrow button next to
the box to add Boolean values AND, OR, NOT, and
NEAR) and select Start Search.
DSM-IV-TR Search: If you
choose to search DSM-IV-TR alone, you will have
five search options:
- Full Text-enter a
word(s) as with the General Search
- Diagnosis-the down
arrow lists all diagnoses; the list button
brings up a display box that allows you to
choose more than one diagnosis (multiple
diagnosis search)
- Criteria Set-the down
arrow lists all criteria sets by diagnosis;
the list button brings up a display box that
allows you to choose more than one criteria
set (multiple criteria set search)
- Diagnostic Code-the
down arrow lists all diagnostic codes; the
list button brings up a display box that
allows you to choose more than one
diagnostic code (multiple diagnostic code
search)
- Key Term-the down
arrow lists all key terms; the list button
brings up a display box that allows you to
choose more than one key term (multiple key
term search)
DSM-IV-TR and Diagnostic
Criteria Search: If you choose to search DSM-IV-TR
and the Diagnostic Criteria, you will have three
search options:
- Diagnostic Code-enter
a word(s) as with the General Search
- Criteria Set-enter a
word(s) as with the General Search
- Full Text-enter a
word(s) as with the General Search
DSM-IV-TR and APA Glossary
Search: If you choose to search DSM-IV-TR and
the Glossary, you will have two search options:
- Glossary Terms-enter a
word(s) as with the General Search
- Full Text-enter a
word(s) as with the General Search
Searching several
publications in one Search retrieves data in a
single search field from documents stored in
several publications. From the Main Screen,
select the publications to be searched. Then
click the main Search button. The available
search fields presented are only those common to
all of the publications selected.
Each Search Form displays
fields that enable you to focus your search on
the corresponding areas in the documents. This
CD-ROM uses a full-text field type for all
publications and a multiterm field type for
diagnosis, criteria set, diagnostic code, and
key term searches.
Three different search
interface forms are available (simple, fielded,
and structured), offering different combinations
of search operators (i.e., Boolean, proximity,
Soundex, synonyms, and wildcards). More
information on changing Search Form preferences
can be found in the INSIGHT help accessed from
the Help drop-down menu or Program Group or
pull-down the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
The Search Forms differ both in user interface
and in search functionality. You may, for
example, prefer to use the Simple Search Form
while learning how to perform a search and then
use the Fielded Search Form as you gain
expertise in searching.
After you have defined the
desired Search Expression, INSIGHT is ready to
start the search process. If the process is
extensive, you can pause the process and view
documents, sort the results, and print the
results.
While a search process
advances, the names of the retrieved documents
start appearing in the Search Results window or
on the Search Results tab. The Search Results
list indicates the number of retrieved documents
currently found and the degree of relevance of
the retrieved documents to your search.
The Search Results list
enables you to sort the search results, select
the documents to be viewed, and view the
documents.
Each time you start a
search, a search cycle begins. A search cycle
includes the Search Expression, the list of
retrieved documents (as they appear in the
Search Results list), and the current display in
the document viewer. You can keep this search
cycle as a separate session and return to this
session at a later stage.
Cut and Paste
This software allows you to
cut and paste paragraphs or images to your
word-processing application. It also allows you
to create an image of a selected area. To cut
and paste text that you can edit, make sure your
cursor is over the text (not outside the text in
the margin). Use your mouse to highlight the
text. Make a copy of the text by going to the
Edit menu and choosing Copy (shortcut is Ctrl+C).
Switch to your word-processing software, place
your cursor in the page where you want to insert
the text, and go to the Edit menu and choose
Paste (shortcut is Ctrl+V).
To create an image of a
selected area, place your cursor outside the
text and draw a box around the area you want to
select. This will display a dotted box around
the selection that will remain after you release
the mouse. Make a copy of the selected area by
going to the Edit menu and choosing Copy
(shortcut is Ctrl+C). Switch to your word-
processing software, place your cursor in the
page where you want to insert your image, and go
to the Edit menu and choose Paste (shortcut is
Ctrl+V). This will create a "picture" of what
you selected.
Exporting Data
Exporting the alphabetical
or numerical listings of DSM-IV-TR diagnoses and
codes (Appendixes E and F) can be very helpful
for use with billing software. Here are the
steps to follow (with the numerical listing used
as an example)
Display Appendix F
(Numerical Listing of DSM-IV-TR Diagnoses and
Codes) in the Document Window. From the File
drop-down menu, choose Export to CSV (Comma
Separated Values), choose the delimiter by which
to separate exported values, and save the file
in your chosen location. (By default, the
exported file will save to the directory where
the software is loaded.) Next, from the File
drop-down menu, choose Export, choose the file
type to save as tab delimeted tables, and place
the resulting file in the same directory as the
previously saved file. Switch to Microsoft Excel
or another spreadsheet program and open the
first file. It will show two lines of text. Next
use Excel to open the second file. The Excel
Text Import Wizard will appear to help you
import the file into the spreadsheet.
