VOLUME I

 

The following CNN segments may be used in conjunction with any Wadsworth introductory textbook. Although the segment may be used in any order, the brief description indicates to which major topic the segments are best related. The length of the actual video segment and the date of the original broadcast, if known, are given in parentheses. Each segment is introduced to set it within a sociology context. Discussion questions appear on screen following each segment. These introductions and questions were written by Professor Jean Stockard, University of Oregon.

 

1.      SCIENCE OF  SHOPPING  (5:10, 11/96)

This segment illustrates how the principals of social research can be used in the business of marketing and retail.

 

2.      DIVORCE AND KIDS  (4:45, 9/96)

This program looks at the impact divorce has on families, especially on young children.

 

3.      CHILDREN AND THE MEDIA  (3:58, 2/96)

This segment looks into the powerful role the media plays in the socialization of children in American society. Parents and Nation leaders discuss ways the media can be made more responsive.

 

4.      STEP FAMILIES  (2:39, 4/95)

More and more American families are characterized by greater diversity. This program looks at the increasingly common occurrence of step families in American society.

 

5.      STEP FAMILIES AND DISCIPLINE  (2:39, 11/95)

One issue step families face is the discipline of children. The issue affects relationships between parents and children and those between husbands and wives.

 

6.      GENDER SOCIALIZATION:  WOMEN AND SCIENCE CAREERS  (3:46)

Women are increasingly entering fields of work once thought to be exclusively male. Yet even today the socialization of girls at the middle school level continues to direct them away from career in science.

This segment looks at the disturbing consequence for society of teenagers having babies.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the U.S. While Asian Americans are less likely to be in poverty than members of other minority groups, they still feel the effects of racial-ethnic stratification.

 

10.    POLLUTION OF THE GANGES  (3:09, 1995)

Environmental pollution is a worldwide crisis. This segment looks at how cultural and religious beliefs can sometimes become enmeshed with public policy.

 

11.    RACIAL-ETHINIC RELATIONS  (5:04, 1992)

Issues on multiculturalism and immigration are examined in one of the most diverse regions of the country, Southern California.

 

12.    RACIAL AND ETHICAL STRATIFICATION IN BRAZIL  (8:07, 1996)

Many societies around the globe are struggling with problems caused by discrimination and stratification based on race and ethnicity. Brazil has the largest black population of any nation other than Nigeria. While it is often depicted as truly multicultural society, serious racial-ethnic tensions can be found in Brazilian society.

 

 

VOLUME II

 

The CNN sociology Today, Volume II Video can be used in conjunction with any Wadsworth introductory textbook. The segments, all from recent CNN broadcasts, may be used in order. A brief description of the segments is provided along with their duration. Each segment is preceded with an introduction that places the topic within a sociological framework. This short segment looks at the successful governorial campaign of former wrestler Jesse Ventura.

This segment looks at the fundamentalist group that has seized control of Afghanistan.

Teen suicide rates have long been a source of concern.

This segment focuses on the debate about passing laws dealing with hate crimes.

This segments looks at the role language plays in assimilation.

This segment looks at how homelessness continues to exist in an affluent society.

This segment looks at the clash of value in the question of who should control a child’s education.

 

19.    Little Rock Integrates  (2:54)

This segment examines the lasting impact of the 1957 integration of the Little Rock schools.

 

 

VOLUME III

 

This is the third in a series of videotapes comprised of footage from CNN broadcast that relates to your introductory sociology course. The segments may be used in conjunction with any Wadsworth introductory sociology textbook. The segments may be shown in any order. Many use it to gather as much as information as possible from donors all over the world in an effort to determine qualities their children will have. Boston high schools are questioning a law that will soon force all seniors to pass a standard test in order to graduate. If it were in place now, it would have prevented 75% of students from graduating-many who have been accepted to good colleges. (Education)

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 many afghan-American immigrants worry about potential biases they may face in America. They depict Afghanistan and the people of the country as victims of terrorist and oppression themselves.

Only a fraction of the 25 million people suffering from AIDS in Africa can afford treatment, and many large drug companies are providing free and reduced price drugs.
