Student Leadership Institute for Everyone (LIFE)
The Student Leadership Institute For Everyone (LIFE) provides leadership development opportunities to all Montgomery College students as part of their co-curricular education. LIFE is ideal for students who wish to explore and expand their leadership skills, launch their personal goals, and develop tools for achieving those goals. LIFE works with students and their interests, experiences, and objectives to develop a personalized leadership program that can fit into anyone’s schedule.
LIFE follows the Maryland Community College Leadership Certification Checklist as a guide for its leadership development curriculum.
Students in the LIFE program are paired with an advisor who is their primary mentor throughout the certification process. Students will check in with advisors approximately once every three weeks (4 times per semester). In addition to providing students with support throughout the process, the LIFE Advisor will also be responsible for verifying the students completion of the leadership criteria with final certification of portfolio completion provided by the Director of Student Life (or designee).
Leadership criteria can be accomplished through various means. The final leadership portfolio can be presented in either hardcopy or electronic format. Upon submission of a completed portfolio students will receive a LIFE leadership recognition letter. Upon portfolio certification students will receive a leadership certificate from the Maryland Community College Activities Directors’ Association (MCCADA).
Each student’s LIFE program schedule should be determined in consultation with their LIFE advisor taking into consideration the individual student’s goals, activities, and expected graduation or transfer date. Students are encouraged to complete the portfolio within 26 weeks or 1 academic year.
Students must complete the LIFE program within 52 weeks of their start date following a:
- 13 week, one semester program
- 26 week, two semester program
- 52 week, four semester (Fall, Spring, Summer 1 and 2) program
